It is looking as if I may be taking a trip to Belize in April to chase tarpon and bones.

Tell me everything I should know in 500 words or less. Ready? Go!

LOL...Well being from Meridian Fucking Idaho I will tell you what I think is important,

1. Long casts are great but your cast needs to hit a spot the size of a bucket not a boat (a good man on the rear platform will get a feel of what your accurate range is.)

2. Fuck small 15 pound leader, you aint going for a world record nor are you going to set one..so plan on using 40-60 pound fluro so you can put the wood to that poon when you MUST..tarpon battles are great but look at it like you are performing in bed with your old lady, after about 15 minutes of really getting after it you want to rest..trust me it's the same with those poons in the flats.

3.Your guide/captain should Know some great loop knots..learn a few just in case you end up with some want to be college trust fund baby puke that is posing as a great tarpon guide.

4. 12 weight rod at least..leave no doubt.

5. your guide should have a system down where he calls out "Tarpon at 3 o'clock moving to 4 AT 70 FEET, you should look 4 and point your rod in that direction..tell him when you see the target! tRY AND THINK OF WHERE THE FISH IS GOING TO BE NOT WHERE THE GUIDE FIRST CALLS IT! ,gET USE TO THAT LINGO BEFORE YOU GO..IF YOUR GUIDE DONT USE IT YOUR FUCKED..WRONG GUIDE..LOL..Poons move fast and you have to be one step in front of them to pull it off!

6, cast long of the poons path, strip the fly in front of the poons window...then fIsh the fly by giggling your rod tip..this girates the fly in front of the poon without having to strip it out of the zone.

7. Look for the eat...watch some video of tarpon takes so you will know what to look for..it is truly a unique eat!

8. STRIP SET...STRIP SET...STRIP SET..oh and clear the line fast!

9. Bow to the king on the jump!

10.Keep as much rod preasure on the poon as you can all of the time...never let the fucker rest! Everytime you let a poon gulp some air you ad five minutes to the battle..Keep them down by applying preasure that prevents them from gulping air!

11. Never line a poon...the gig is up if you do! If you find fish in a chain..make casts that do not line any fish..hope you have a good guide to walk you through this as it gets a bit tricky on chains going counter or clockwise.

12. WATCH BILLY PATES TARPON SERIES BY 3M 100 TIMES BEFORE YOU GO..HE IS A GOD!

Location x / World angling Media group Rocks...I watch that shit everyday..It is truly the best fish porn! great shots, great production and all of that crew really knows what the hell they are doing! I got to fish with Mark Phillips a couple of years ago in Key west who was part of that "crew" at the time. While fishing with him I had a big tarpon eat a fly and on the first or second jump spit it but the fly stuck in the poons pectoral fin.. Happend so fast we did not see what happend til we got the fish to the boat..Shiat I faught that fish almost 2 hours and Phillips was thinking I was a big puss, shit I was wondering about the purpose of life myself after that battle..I was putting some serious fucking wood and preasure on that poon but could not turn him down or sideways because of the fly stuck in the pec fin not the mouth...The eat was real cool and close to the boat and we both watched the fly go in the bucket(mouth) so we were both suprised to see it in the pec fin...Billy Pates is a more of a "How to Production" hell even some of the great flats guides always watch his old tarpon series over and over again..that old fucker has landed so many tarpon and big ones to boot he is in a class of his own.Pate wrote much of the book on many of the tactics that are still used today. Those old Tarpon hounds use to hold their cards pretty close and their trade secrets only have become more and more public over the last 10-15 years.

I tell you slut the one thing about Tarpon battles is you replay them through your mind for years in great detail..I often have random thoughts of poon battles pop in my mind 10-12 years later,shit I land and loose a tarpon over and over again everyday in my mind..cool shit. Big problem with fishing for them is there is no sense of accomplishment or satisfaction, the only cure to the passion or addiction is the next eat..more so than with any other fish I have chased. I should warn you and tell you to just say no to this drug before you become a Tarpon Tweeker, the fix is a long ways from your house and it aint cheap to get there~
